Study of Football Players Looks at Connection Between Weight Lifting and Heart Wall Stiffness

How much weight lifting is too much? As part of a multifaceted study funded by the NFL Players Association to assess the post-career health risks that football players face, Mass General researcher Aaron Baggish, MD, is following up on testing that indicates that intense weight lifting is responsible for making players’ heart walls stiff and inflexible, which in turn makes it difficult for the heart to rest properly. Baggish is now researching ways to intervene and prevent that stiffness from occurring.
